Scientists Develop Computer Program That Predicts When Hospital Patient Will Die

A team of researchers at Stanford University in the US has developed a computer program that can predict when a hospital patient will die with unnerving level of accuracy.

According to the team, their program is right 90% of the time. It will be used to provide appropriate end-of-life car to hospital patients with a terminal disease.

The program uses artificial intelligence and was trained through analysis of 160,000 adult and child patient files from Stanford and Lucile Packard Children's hospital.

It looked at things in health records such as diagnosis, procedures performed and which medicine a patient was taking. When the algorithm was applied to 40,000 active patients (it was asked to predict which would die in the next three to twelve months) it was correct in 90% of cases.

"The scale of data available allowed us to build an all-cause mortality prediction model, instead of being disease or demographic specific," said Anand Avati, a member of Stanford University's AI Lab, reported IBTimes .

The researchers plan to continue refining the system with more data before it is rolled out to hospitals and medical staff.

Kenneth Jung, a research scientist at Stanford University said: "We think that keeping a doctor in the loop and thinking of this as 'machine learning plus the doctor' is the way to go as opposed to blindly doing medical interventions based on algorithms... that puts us on firmer ground both ethically and safety-wise"

James Franco goes into 'hiding,in a really bad place' amid sex misconduct allegations

This year's Best actor in a musical Golden Globe winner,James Franco is being accused by five women of being inappropriate or sexually exploitative — and he's reportedly "hiding" from the fallout.

The actor skipped the Critics' Choice Awards on Thursday — where he won the award for Best Actor in "The Disaster Artist." The ceremony took place just hours after the L.A. Times published the stories of the five women.

"He's in a really bad place, so bad that he changed his phone number," a source close to the situation told People. "His close friends are trying to be there for him but it's been hard - he's only talking to a select group of people. For now, he's just hiding out."

Five women told the Times that Franco, 39, abused his power as an acting teacher at Studio 4 in New York and Los Angeles.

'Your Money No Dey Miss' Ubi Franklin Comes For Those Asking Him How He Made His Money

Yo! Ubi Franklin is not having it this afternoon, and has called out Nigerians, especially youths who like to look at others who have made it and ask 'how did he make his money, how did she make her money'. Ubi says such people should rather face those they elected in office who live well above their salaries and stop facing successful hard working men. He said;

Very Annoying when people ask questions like “how did he make his money” “where him carry money from” Why do you want to know how He/she made Money? There is a fundamental issue here and we need to fix it starting from The Youths of our dear Nation. We tend to hold hardworking young men accountable and forget we have people who we all elected into power and going by what they earn officially cannot afford the lifestyle they live. So don’t ask me questions Cos your money no dey miss 😀😀😀😀.

Why you shouldn't drink the coffee on airplanes,’ flight attendant warns

An industry insider had advised travelers not to drink coffee on airplanes.

“Don’t drink the coffee on airplanes. It’s the same potable water that goes through the bathroom system,” an unidentified flight attendant “for a major American airline” revealed to vice.com“We recently had a test for E. coli in our water and it didn’t pass, and then maintenance came on and hit a couple buttons and it passed,” the flight attendant added. “So, avoid any hot water or tea. Bottled and ice is fine, of course.”

That said, sipping bottled water could lead you to use the plane’s bathrooms, which the anonymous stew called “the most disgusting places on the planet.”
“There’s no way these people act this way in their normal lives,” the source added. “But they get on a plane and go, ‘Cool, I’ll just pee all over the floor and dump my peanuts right on the ground.’”

The source also says that contrary to what many believe, traveling all the time for work is not so cool. “It’s not nearly as glamorous as people let on,” the stew said, “but you figure that out pretty quickly.”
